I love teaching at St. Theresa Catholic School for a variety of reasons. I am able to share my faith daily with my students. The atmosphere of our school is a celebration of all facets of the Catholic faith. We strive to have academic excellence, meeting each student where they are and help them learn the best way they can. The staff is very supportive and truly cares about one another. I have been a fourth grade teacher at St. Theresa for 19 years and have loved every minute. The leadership of Mrs. Stemler, our principal, allows me to be creative, innovative, and the passionate teacher I have grown to be. It is truly a blessing to be able to learn with my students, parents, and colleagues.
I grew up in many places in Iowa – Lone Tree, Avoca, DeWitt, Ankeny, and finally West Des Moines. I graduated from Valley High School and attended Des Moines Area Community college. I earned my B.A. from Clarke College in Dubuque and my Master’s Degree from Viterbo University. I always challenge myself with educational workshops, STEM trainings, and post graduate work. I am always learning!
My family is the heart of whom I am. My husband is Bob Hingtgen – a Dowling graduate. We have been married for 38 years this year. We have been blessed with three children – Kelly, Justin, and Katy. All three went through parochial schools and are Dowling graduates. All completed college and have successful careers in nursing and business. Kelly is married and has two children – Millie and Wyatt. Justin is married and has two children – Carter and Kelsie. Our youngest Katy, is getting married in April 2018. Being a grandma is pure joy! I share my family with each child I have the privilege of working with at St. Theresa Catholic School. Doing the little things in life for others every day lets me live the true meaning of St. Theresa of the Little Child Jesus!
We have a long history at STCS. My husband graduated from St. Theresa as have all three of my children. Through these years, it has been obvious this was where we belong. What drew me to STCS was the dedication, excellence and caring shown by the STCS teachers and community. I quickly realized that I wanted to be part of that. I felt the calling to serve the STCS community. I went back to college, earning my bachelor’s degree in teaching. I am proud to be part of this wonderful, caring community.
I grew up in a tiny town in Northwest Iowa and moved to Des Moines for my first job after graduating from Buena Vista University. I worked with children and their families in the social work field, then stayed home for a number of years with my children. I then worked in the school lunch program at STCS while earning my teaching degree. I have recently earned my master’s degree in teaching. I love teaching at St. Theresa because of the dedicated teachers, hardworking students and supportive, involved parents. I feel such a sense of support and count this wonderful faith filled community as part of my family. I wouldn’t be anywhere else.
