I teach at St. Theresa Catholic School because this is where I feel called to be. There is something special in the atmosphere of STCS. It starts with the leadership of Mrs. Ellen Stemler and Fr. Mark Neal, and is reflected throughout the entire school. The guiding question is always “What is best for the child?” I can’t imagine not being able to incorporate our Catholic faith into everything we here throughout the day.
I grew up near the small northeast Iowa town of Protivin and attended Catholic grade school there. From the time I was a child I have always wanted to be a second grade teacher. I received my undergrad and graduate degrees in education/special education from ISU. This is my twenty-second year teaching second grade at St. Theresa’s—best grade ever!! My husband Kevin and I have 5 children, all graduates of St. Theresa Catholic and Dowling Catholic. We have 5 grandchildren, 3 of whom are currently enrolled at STCS. In addition to spending much time with my grandchildren, I also love to read, walk, and eat. Yes, it is true that I don’t have a TV at home. Go Bears! Go Cyclones!
My name is Jen Faber, and I have been teaching at STCS since 2008. Before coming to St. Theresa, I taught for five years (three years at a public school outside of Houston, Texas and two years at Immaculate Conception in Sioux City) and stayed home for five years with my three sons (Dalton, now 16; Ben, now 14 and 10-year-old Nathan). Since coming to St. Theresa, I have had the opportunity to teach 4th grade, Spanish to K-8 and back to the classroom for 3rd grade. I loved them all and look forward to every fall and the challenges and rewards that come with every new group. My family keeps me very busy with sports, scouts, choirs and camping. I am thankful for this busy time and know it will be over way too soon.
The reason why I most love teaching at St. Theresa Catholic school is the people. The parish and Father Mark are incredibly supportive and generous. Parishioners are often found in the building doing maintenance, cleaning the lounge or dropping off donations of various office supplies and books.
The teachers and staff give 100% every day to do what is best for the children in this building. It is truly amazing being part of an innovative, collaborative staff that is not afraid to take risks with their teaching, share what they know and try hard to reach every child where he/she is. The parents are amazing! They work diligently to support the teachers in whatever way is needed. From copying to cutting, from reading to organizing class parties, from Talking Canvas to garage sales, our parents are involved with the day-to-day success of the school.
The students are priceless! With a wide variety of backgrounds, they all come together to live their faith, learn life lessons and look to become tomorrow’s leaders. They do become a tight-knit community and genuinely look out for one-another’s well-being.
STCS has been such a blessing in my life and in the life of my family. I am so thankful I found a place I could live my faith and impact the faith of my students.
